In early years of Islam, the term "zindiq" was used to denote those who privately held doctrines such as Manichaeism derived from Iranian religions, and publicly professed Islam. It initially spread so rapidly that it was seriously rivaling Christianity for some time (St Augustine briefly adhered to it in North Africa). This religion descends from the Gnostic traditions of Persia, derives its teachings from a variety of sources (eg, Christian, Buddhism, Zorostrianism) and rejects tracing the origins of good and evil to "one and the same source." It advocates severe asceticism, including vegetarianism, to separate good from the evil. It has been founded by Mani (216-276 AD) born in Southern Babylonia. Manichaesim is an Iranian religion that predates Islam.
